A Civil Tongue: How to Talk About Tough Issues Facing Us Today

Do you find you sometimes don’t talk about important issues because you're afraid you’ll start an argument with family members, friends or co-workers that won’t end well? Have others ever stopped you from having such conversations, lest you “make trouble”?  In fact, that’s a phenomenon we’ve experienced within the walls of GJC in trying to balance freedom of expression—especially around issues of morality and justice—and shalom bayit, maintaining peace among people with divergent and often equally valid points of view.

GJC Understanding and Combatting Racsim Book Group

The GJC book group for those interested in understanding and combatting racism continues on November 16th at 7:15 PM at GJC.  Following Rabbi Adam’s call in his high holiday sermons to continue to engage with issues of race and equality, so our next “book” for consideration is the Movement for Black Lives Platform, resulting from the Black Lives Matter movement. 

We understand that some may struggle with some parts of this considerable platform. Our goal is to understand this complex work in total.

If you like to cook and schmooze, the Marcus Kitchen's the place to be on December 20th! We will bake for synagogue members who are in need of compassion and nutrition.  Expect to spend 3 hours mixing, kneading, chopping, dicing, simmering and baking.  We will be preparing and freezing challot, kugel and soup for 50 food packages.

GJC's Social Action Committee is pleased to offer a two-­-part workshop for GJC Members interested in an in-­-depth exploration of racism and its impact on our community and ourselves.  This workshop is a next step in building our cultural competency to shape and strengthen our relationships with people of color and increase our effectiveness in the Tikun Olam work we do both within GJC and in the larger community.
