Prayer Services - Minyan Masorti
Welcome to Minyan Masorti

Who We Are

We are a religious community that gathers for Shabbat and holiday davening (prayer) and celebrations. Minyan members lead our tefilot (prayers), which consist of an egalitarian version of a traditional service. We're an informal group, in which everyone is welcome. Davenning, singing, learning, eating, drinking, and schmoozing are some of our specialties. Our ruach (spirit) rises from what we give the group, so everyone is encouraged to contribute in those areas in which they feel comfortable. Members are also encouraged to learn new skills and to expand their areas of comfort.

Our service is led on a volunteer basis by members of the Minyan. While Rabbis and Cantors are members of our Minyan, their roles are as equal participants in the group where all members are invited to learn the skills to assume leadership of the service.

Our service includes a full Torah reading, Haftarah and Musaf service. All the prayers and the reading of the Torah and Haftarah are in Hebrew. The only section that takes part in English is the D'var Torah, which tends to be text-based and brief.

It is customary in our minyan to have children who have not yet become Bar or Bat Mitzvah lead the ending prayers and hymns at the end of Musaf.

What We Do

Shabbat and Holidays

  • Shabbat and Holiday mornings begin with services in the Canteen Room (located in the basement of the school wing) from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm, followed by a kiddush.
  • GJC offers several child care and children's service options. These programs run throughout the school year.
  • Joint services with other minyanim take place occasionally for special events.

Special Events and Meetings

  • Special events include the minyan retreat, Friday night dinners, seudah shlishit, anniversary Shabbat, Hanukah party, Shavuot lunch, Shabbat afternoon Frisbee and/or football games (SFL).
  • Quarterly minyan meetings serve as a forum for members to discuss and develop ritual, educational, and social programs and policies.
